Mum and Gran used to have their Sunday best hats and special hats they would wear to funerals. They used to go the races and have hats for that too. We had berets and boater hats as our school uniform which made me hate hats then.
The use of feathers were inspired by the thought of birds and flight and the freedom of movement.
The feathers were an adornment to create a fanciful feeling. The hat has the feel of the roaring 20’s era and happiness of a social occasion. Anyone associate with that era would recognise this hat “ the elaborateness of hats in those days would feature fringes and beads and sparkles “ with this hat you would see more hat than hair.
I remember fondly a particular pair of black ankle strap peep toe shoes that mum wore to community dances. She loved her shoes.
Note: The Casablanca hat and the ‘cork’ wedge shoes were a feature of the Beyond Garment (accessories in fashion) exhibition held in November 2010 at the Maritime Museum in Fremantle W.A. as part of the W A Fashion Festival.
