This painting is about Glen Helen Gorge - that's my Pmere [Country] - my father's Pmere. Jukurrpa associated with Glen Helen Gorge include the Rainbow Serpent and the Moon Man and his wives. Glen Helen Gorge was created by the ancient Finke River which cut through the West MacDonnell ranges at this point west of Alice Springs on its journey into the desert to the south east. The Ranges comprise pacoota sandstone, forming steep, broken ridges. The permanent Finke River waterhole at Glen Helen Gorge is an important refuge, particularly during summer, supporting all nine species of fish recorded for the Finke. It is an important stopover for the migratory waterbirds travelling along its course. The Finke River continues and makes its way to the Simpson Desert where it is absorbed into the aquifer that lies beneath the desert.
