Bessie Malarvie’s desert country near Lake Gregory to the south of the Kimberley region becomes a garden abundant with bush foods. Jalbarr - the bush tomato twists and turns in pathways across the open sands during the wet season rains. The ground covering vines flower and seed sending forth fruit that is gathered during the dry weather. “You can smell its sweetness all around,” says Bessie. “It is ready to eat. You take out the seeds and cook them in the coals with bush turkey”. Jalbarr – the bush tomato has provided for thousands of years - rich in life giving sustenance. Bessie’s images of Jalbarr are a repeated motif of fleshy fruit overlaid with delicate seeds.
