Robyne Latham is a Yamatji woman from Western Australia, working as an artist and academic in Melbourne for the past 30 years.
POD2 is one of 12 works in her ‘Strange Fruit’ sculpture series created to celebrate the revival and revitalization of Aboriginal cultural practices across Australia. POD2 replicates the seedpod of the Australian gum-tree. The seedpod being the ‘womb’ for the potential of new growth via the scattering and burning of seeds through the agency of wind and fire. It references the resilience of Aboriginal culture and the hope that Australians be enriched by the fifty thousand years of wisdom and knowledge of Australia’s first nations people.
The She-oak, used to fire Latham’s cermic sculptures, is sacred to the Yamatji women of Western Australia.
