We are pleased to announce the beginning of a creative collaboration which will unite the heart and soul of two of the world’s most ancient cultures.
Indian fashion designer Roopa Pemeraju has joined forces with Stephen Culley from Desert Designs (the first indigenous licensing company), and Adrian Newstead (director, Coo-ee Gallery, Australia’s oldest Aboriginal Art Gallery). “Roopa has had the vision to expand Desert Designs’ core philosophy of economically empowering Aboriginal people,” says Newstead. “She has brought together some of Australia’s finest living indigenous artists, and put their work into the hands of skilled Indian artisans.
The result is fabulously exotic, handcrafted, beautifully designed contemporary fashion.
“In our combined 50 years in the industry, we have never seen a more grounded, inspiring project,” says Culley. “Roopa has created a wonderful opportunity for cultural and economic collaboration across the Indian Ocean.”
The spectacular new range of resort wear will launch in Sydney Fashion Week, on Thursday May 3, at the Overseas’ passenger terminal, Circular Quay.
“This venture is close to our hearts too,” says Newstead. “It’s ethical, innovative, and culturally sensitive. We are confident the range will have global impact on contemporary fashion.”
