Featured Lots

LOT 68
Trevor Nickolls
Full Moon - 2010
91.0 x 91.0 cm

EST. $15,000 - $20,000

AN IMPORTANT WORK RELEASED FROM THE ESTATE OF THE ARTIST

Nickolls explored the alienation of the individual in an industrialised landscape as a counterpoint to the concept of the ‘Harmony of Nature’. He coined the catchphrase ‘Dreamtime - Machinetime’ to describe the divide between Aboriginal and Western cultures. In this work, these two realities are juxtaposed with contrasting areas of colour, texture and spatial composition. A language of symbols fills the image. The scene appears peaceful and serene but there is disquiet in the lifeless city below.

LOT 43
Emily Kame Kngwarreye
Awelye | Food Travels Dreaming - 1995
120.0 x 90.0 cm

EST. $20,000 - $30,000

UNUSUAL LATE CAREER WORK - INCREDIBLE VALUE

The painting depicts Wild Orange, Uparli (Bush Banana), Wild Plum and Sultana, and stylistically resonates closely with works created by the artist 5 years earlier at the beginning of her 7-year painting career.

LOT 39
Tim Leura Tjapaltjarri
Love Story - 1979
95.0 x 170.0 cm

EST. $30,000 - $40,000

A POWERFUL AND IMPORTANT WORK BY A DESERT MASTER

Tim Leura was steeped in ancient lore and is recognised as having been Geoffrey Bardon’s principal assistant and instrumental in the development of Clifford Possum’s talent and technique. This powerful layered work depicts the tale of incestuous lust and the magical spells cast by an old Tjungurrayi man in order to seduce a woman of the wrong skin.

LOT 47
Maggie Watson Napangardi
Mina Mina - 1997
151.0 x 78.0 cm

EST. $20,000 - $30,000

A LOVELY EXAMPLE BY THE GREATEST WARLPIRI FEMALE ARTIST

This highly accomplished work combines several of the major themes underlying the Mina Mina creation story made famous by the three most revered Warlpiri female artists - Maggie Watson, her sister Judy Watson, and Dorothy Napangardi.

LOT 42
Tim Leura Tjapaltjarri
Emu Ceremonial Dreaming - 1972
91.5 x 60.5 cm

EST. $80,000 - $100,000

A WONDERFUL PAINTING – JUST EXTRAORDINARY – A SENSATION

Painted in February 1972, at the same time as its sister painting, Clifford Possum’s Emu Coroboree Man (the first painting Possum ever created in the painting room at Papunya specifically for Bardon). Comparing the two paintings, the similarities of the dancing figure are obvious as are the body paint elements, the pubic feather belt, the behind the back emu Churinga, and the emu feather capped headdresses.Yet the differences are startling. While Tim Leura has illustrated astronomical references to the Dreamtime dimension by literal white dotting and star alignment, Clifford Possum shows the same complex concept through a patch of multi-planed parallel lines. They both show sacred objects in abundance. This is a rare, important and vital piece of art history. It is especially relevant to the connoisseur interested in development of the art movement and its many hidden meanings.

LOT 46
Emily Kame Kngwarreye
My Country - 1994
124 x 180 cm

EST. $40,000 - $60,000

INTERESTING EXHIBITION HISTORY – GREAT BUY AT THIS PRICE

Commissioned by Patrick Corbally Stourton for his Cork Street gallery, London, in 1995 and illustrated in The Spectator magazine. This highly colour charged visually abstracted painting demonstrates Emily’s ability to produce works that are both dynamic and ethereal.

Lot 32
Artist Once Known
Queensland Rainforest shield - circa early 20th century
94.0 x 38.0 cm

EST. $15,000 - $20,000

AN EXCELLENT LARGE PIECE - VERY KEENLY PRICED

This large dueling rainforest fig shield was used in ritual fighting in the Cardwell region of far north Queensland. Similar examples were used as protection against the blows of heavy wooden swords in combat.

LOT 31
Jarinyanu David Downs
Untitled | Wakaya Ceremony - c.1983
119.0 x 120.0 cm

EST. $25,000 - $35,000

UNIQUE, EXTREMELY RARE AND VERY EARLY EAST KIMBERLEY WORK

This board is believed to be one of the artist’s earliest works. It is a rare early example of East Kimberley painting and shows evidence of having been carried in, or used as the backdrop to a ceremony.

LOT 40
Ena Nungurayai Gimme
Artist's Mother's Country - 1991
100 x 75 cm

EST. $5,000 - $8,000

EXTREMELY GOOD VALUE - A RARE OPPORTUNITY

The eldest daughter of Eubena Nampitjin, Ena Gimme created jewel-like paintings that were strongly influenced by her mother and the older female painters at Balgo Hills. Her paintings are extremely rare as she passed away just three years after she had begun painting on canvas in 1992.

LOT 49
Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri
Love Story at Ngarlu - 1991
152.5 x 122.0 cm

EST. $80,000 - $120,000

ICONIC WORK WITH EXCELLENT EXHIBITION HISTORY – A TROPHY WORK BY POSSUM

This painting depicts aspects of Possum’s leit motif - the tale of incestuous lust and the magical spells cast by an old Tjungurrayi man to seduce a woman of the wrong skin. The woman does not realise until too late that she is being stalked by the Tungurrayi who is telepathically calling her to him while using ritual paraphernalia and a sacred ground painting. Eventually he will be punished for this indiscretion. In this painting Clifford Possum uses 'straight line' dotting, a technique invented by and exclusive to him and his works.
