![]() ![]() Preliminary sketch for the Native Title paintings. |
This exhibition includes ten 'Native Title Paintings' along with the first 35 paintings to be sold from this community. The canvases and boards contain sacred and profound imagery and depict their country in a singular way. While a number of works exhibit the complexity in content of the early Papunya and Balgo boards, others, especially those of the old men, share the simplicity of the best of the great Kimberley artists. The women especially paint in a way that is reminiscent of the lively colour fields of 1980's Yuendumu art. Yet they style is separate from all of these and quite unique amongst the myriad styles created by desert artists today. At their best these artists reaffirm that within the notion of 'dot 'paintings there is the possibility of infinite stylistic variety, and that the most unaffected of these styles emerge as artists initially engage in this particular way of expressing their rich and timelessly adaptive cultural heritage. A 50 page annotated catalogue in full colour is available upon request. |
