In 1986 a small group of women produced the first
paintings for Warnayaka Art Centre, Lajamanu NT. These paintings have
become important documents of Warlpiri culture held in the National
Gallery of Victoria, collected at the instigation of the curator
Judith Ryan.
This important exhibition of contemporary desert paintings
from Lajamanu provides an opportunity for visitors to expand their
perception of contemporary Aboriginal Art beyond the extraordinary
vision provided by the "Papunya Tula-Genesis and Genius"
exhibition held by the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
This Lajamanu exhibition also provides an interesting adjunct to the contemporary Pintupi women's paintings from Kintore on exhibit at the AGNSW.
