Billy Benn’s painting celebrates the land and the artist’s knowledge of it. This exhibition includes a large number of works collected by James Barry, who first realised Benn’s talents in the 1990s.
“Billy Benn first started working for Bindi Inc. in 1981, constructing metal boxes in the workshop. In the 1990s workshop co-ordinator James Barry … began providing paints and off-cuts of metal and timber for Benn to work with. Ben soon took over a corner of the workshop and this became his painting space.” (Excerpt from ‘Billy Benn’, Catherine Peattie)
The country Benn painted was his birthplace, Artetyerre. He dreamt of returning to live there, but painted his works from memory.
