Cooee returns to Oxford street for its 35th-anniversary exhibition

Cooee Art, Australia’s oldest Aboriginal Art Gallery, is celebrating its 35th anniversary by returning to Oxford Street where it began as Coo-ee Emporium in 1981.

Opening Thursday 1st December 2016 6-8pm
Pop-up continues: 1st – 30th December 2016
Location: Wadsworth Gallery, 326 Oxford Street   Paddington 2021

The Emporium was the first Australiana store in Australia specialising in hand made arts crafts, clothing and furnishings. It eschewed licensed and manufactured products,  famously advertising –

No more back of Bourke coffee mugs, Taiwanese boomerangs, dadges and brooches. Today in Australia there are a growing number of artists and designers creating a new cultural concept of the unique and beautiful images that make up the oldest continent in the world.

Oxford Street was a very different place 35 years ago. The shopping strip had descended into an ugly and narrow traffic corridor. Rents were as low as $80 per week and businesses operated only with existing use rights provided they maintained residences on their upper floors.

Adrian Newstead and a team of dedicated small shop owners, whose art and fashion businesses had grown out of the Paddington markets, spent two decades building the chamber of commerce and pushing through street scape improvements, façade repainting, footpath refurbishment and eventually, enlisting Australia’s most influential town planners, pushing through Paddington’s Oxford Street rezoning.

By the 1990s, Cooee Art had become a fine art gallery, and after 25 years on Oxford Street, moved to its own purpose-built gallery at Bondi Beach and, from both locations, Cooee Art has curated and toured more than 300 exhibitions to venues throughout Australia and overseas.

In January 2016 Adrian Newstead was awarded an Order of Australia for his work in promoting Indigenous arts through the gallery and museums sector – a far cry from  humble beginnings in the Paddington markets.

Now, for one month only, Cooee Art will return to Oxford Street in December to celebrate its 35th birthday with a curated exhibition that will feature works highlighting the past three decades of ‘the greatest contemporary art movement of the 20th century’ Robert Hughes

The exhibition will change weekly and showcase some of the Aboriginal art movement’s most celebrated artists, young contemporary painters and a throw back to the 1980’s with fabrics and clothing from Desert Designs. Available will be works from $200 right through to $200,000, including old bark paintings and Mimi spirit's, and a range of small works that are perfect for gift giving at Christmas right through to that next investment you have been contemplating.
