'This is my Mother's Mother's country, out near Canteen Creek. We go hunting for wild onions, goannas, echidnas, and sugar bag honey in the trees. I like to hunt in my country. There is no water all year round. Even if it looks dry, we follow the bird tracks to know where to dig and then we find water.'
Bonney paints Tijamburra, her Grandmother's country, after the rain when the many grasses are out, and the riverbed is still sandy. From a high vantage point, almost an aerial perspective, the artist maps her country that her family has custodianship over, depicting the bush medicine and bush tucker that grows there.
Her use of a broad spectrum of colour to finely execute the flora and fauna and the meandering riverbed that dissects the composition in half is an innovative approach that draws in your attention.Share
