Story
Shakira began painting in September 2006. Her first canvases were for Mbantua Gallery after she had borrowed some of the canvas and paint belonging to her mother, Lisa Mills Pwerl.
Shakira lives in the Utopia region and was encouraged by her large, extended family of painters to take up a brush and let her creativity run loose. One of our youngest artists, Shakira’s face proudly sports a huge smile when she finishes a new painting. We hope she has a great future and continues to learn the traditions of her culture through painting.
Shakira paints the same subject as her mum, the Anaty (desert yam). There is an ancient Dreamtime story belonging to the Anaty which Shakira will continue to be taught as she gets older. This story belongs to her mother’s country, Irrwelty. Her designs are very similar to her mother’s, her teacher, where linear work represents the root system of the yam and dots are its seeds.
