          Cooee Art was established in 1981 and is Australia’s oldest exhibiting Indigenous art gallery. 

          The gallery has presented the finest Aboriginal and First Nations art through their exhibition program for over 40 years showing the work of over 150 individual artists.

          The Cooee Art stockroom includes contemporary Aboriginal paintings, rare bark paintings and artefacts, early desert boards and acrylic paintings as well as sculpture and limited edition fine art prints.

          The gallery occupies the ground floor of a distinctive and prominently located building only minutes from Surry Hills, Redfern, and Waterloo’s art districts. Originally the headquarters and state-of-the-art factory of Foster Clark custard, 17 Thurlow St later became the studio and assembly for iconic Australian artist Ken Done. Now, Cooee Art’s flagship gallery, the space has been designed with a modern aesthetic whilst retaining elements of its past. A blank canvas, the space offers versatility to cater for a variety of purposes – including private events, art exhibitions, launch events, photo shoots, or performances.

Cooee is now Australia’s oldest exhibiting Indigenous art gallery. Story

As one of the last generation to remember a childhood lived in the desert, Walangkura Napanangka travelled by foot over the hundreds of kilometres from her remote desert home before settling at Papunya with her mother Inyuwa, adoptive father Tutuma Tjapangati, and sister Pirrmangka Napanangka all of whom became artists.

In 1994 she participated in the historic women’s collaborative painting project that was initiated by the older women, and in time Walangkura became one of Papunya Tula’s most senior women artists. Her first solo exhibition was held at Gallery Gabrielle Pizzi in 2003, and this was followed by another at Utopia Art Sydney in 2004.

This painting depicts the designs associated with Wirrulnga, a site with two rockholes on top of a hill, just east of the Kiwirrkurra Community. The small shapes represent the rocks surrounding the site. A large group of ancestral women vistied the site and gather the berries known as Ngamunypurru or Conkleberry from the shrub Carissa lancoeolata. The women later travelled east passing through Pukanya and Umair and then on to Pinari, north of Kintore.
