Tjawina Porter Nampitjinpa and her sisters Nyurapaya and Esther Giles were born at Yumara, north of Docker River, Western Australia.
After the death of their younger brother, the family moved to the newly established government settlement of Papunya in the early 1970s. The sisters were at the centre of the art movement beginning to emerge. Nyurapayia Nampitjinpa was a promient and powerful presence in the 1994 painting camp, attended by Haasts Bluff and Kintore women, which initiated painting amongst women of the region. Today, all three sisters are senior Western Desert artists.
Like her sister Esther Giles, Tjawina Porter Nampitjinpa was known for her skill as a traditional basket weaver before being recognised for her exceptional painting skills. Like other desert artists who moved from their homelands, she has maintained a strong connection to her ancestral country around Docker River.Share
