Story
Tiernan turns her attention to comment on the outcomes of the cross-cultural engagement and raises alarm bells about climate change, taking a swing at the European mismanagement of inland waterways and the widespread death of its native fish populations. This she does by irreverently depicting the writhing spirit-forms of fish, suspended high into the eucalyptus tree canopy.
The riverside bush setting of her painting and its associated mythological reference to the captive white woman of Gippsland, refers to Sydney Nolan’s Riverbend Series on the Goulburn River, and is association with the infamous European folklore associated with Ned Kelly. Tiernan draws attention to the fact that both Indigenous peoples’ mythology and Gippsland based folklore base their discourses on a dynamic system of myth making (refer catalogue essay).
