Minnie’s career shared much in common with that of her sister-in-law, the great Emily Kame Kngwarreye. Both began painting in their late 70s and both created work for a period of seven years. Despite a short early period during which Emily painted tightly controlled painstaking fields of tiny dots obscuring detailed iconography beneath, both painted the majority of their works equally gesturally and produced a prodigious output. Both artists painted works that were immensely popular, most especially amongst women, and were able to support a number of close relatives with the income they generated.

 

The bold linear patterns of stripes and curves throughout this particular painting depict the women's ceremonial body paint design. The songs they sing during preparation for ceremony (Awelye) relate to Dreamtime stories of ancestral travel as well as plants, animals and natural forces. In performing these ceremonies women demonstrate their respect for the land and ensure abundance during the season ahead.
