In painting this work, Rosella has used her fingers to create rhythmic parallel striations, a style derived from the sand drawing that was taught to her by her grandmother.

She explains that for time immemorial ,beach people have talked in the sand. 'Out camping, the old people sit around the fire, yarn 'bout before-time', and draw in the sand. They talk about family ways, how you're related, which family side you're from, and who you can go with. They know country for everyone too - land country, sea country.'

Rosella Namok's paintings engage traditional themes but she explores them in her own distinctive style with a modern sensibility. She emerged as a member of the  Lockhart River ‘Art Gang’ that burst onto the contemporary art scene in the late 1990s. Her symbols can represent both figurative and abstract forms without having to demarcate between the two. They are expressions of a way of life in Lockhart River where ancestral heritage is part of everyday life, and tradition finds form in the modern.
