NOpening Tomorrow 2-4pm still on but - Artist Talk Cancelled
Opening Tomorrow, Saturday 10th March 2-4pm at our Paddington Gallery
Artist Talk Cancelled
It is with great sadness that we learned this week of the sudden passing of Kitty Simon Napanangka’s daughter after returning from the Lajamanu renal dialysis clinic. This tragic news has initiated Sorry Business in the community as all of Kitty’s clanswomen gather around her in the grieving process. Over the coming weeks, members of her extended family and clan will arrive to participate in the mourning ceremony from outstations scattered throughout the Tanami Desert and communities as far south as Yuendumu and Balgo Hills to the west.
Mirri and all of us in the Cooee family have sent our condolences and supplies to help feed the dozens of people who will set up camp in Lajamanu over the next two weeks.
It has been decided that Kitty’s exhibition at our Paddington gallery should still open this Saturday, in order to generate funds for the funeral and other expenses. We have, however, cancelled our gallery talk (which Kitty was planning to attend) and re-scheduled Kitty’s flights to coincide with the end of her exhibition or a little after (mid April). Stay tuned for further details.
In the meantime, please do attend the opening of this wonderful exhibition on Saturday and show your support to Kitty and the other Warlpiri artists of Lajamanu. Kitty herself receives renal dialysis regularly each week and this sad event brings home to us the parlous state of Aboriginal health in remote Australia and the poignancy of loss felt by our Warlpiri friends at this time.
