These paintings are the equal of any contemporary art being created anywhere in the world today. Yet they are not being exhibited in an institution or museum but a private gallery. – Adrian Newstead OAM

The room is bursting with major works including several masterpieces. This is an exhibition that showcases the greatest artists of the Aboriginal Art Movement in a way that no museum can replicate.

The works at Australian Galleries have been carefully commissioned and sourced by Cooee Art Gallery from remote Aboriginal art communities, private dealers and local and international private collections. They include masterpieces by Rover Thomas, Bill Whiskey, Kathleen Petyarre, Naata Nungurrayi, and Nyurapaya Nampitjinpa (Mrs Bennett) as well as prestigious art award winners and finalists. More than 40 great works created by the finest artists of the Aboriginal art movement.

This is the first time since it was founded in 1956 that Australian Galleries has showcased the best in Aboriginal art. The exhibition reflects the passion shared by Adrian Newstead and Stuart Purves, and their zeal and commitment to showcase the finest of Australian contemporary art.
