In 1966, a collection of artwork by Aboriginal children who were part of the Stolen Generation was given to Colgate University in New York State by American businessman and art collector Herbert Mayer. Herbert bought the works from a woman named Florence Rutter, who was a benefactor of Western Australia’s Carrolup Native School and Settlement. It was at that settlement between 1945 and 1951 where the Noongar Aboriginal students, many of whom had been forcibly removed from their families, created their drawings and paintings.
Now Colgate University is voluntarily returning the 119 artworks home to Curtin University in Perth.
