Nyapanyapa Yunupingu

Nyapanyapa Yunupingu

1945

Born c1945, Nyapanyapa Yunupingu lives in Yirrkala in Northeast Arnhem Land, NT. She has rapidly gained acclaim as a bark painter since 2008, when she held her first solo exhibition with Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery in Sydney. Since then the exclusive representation has yielded many more solo exhibitions and two inclusions in the Biennale of Sydney in 2012 and 2016. She was awarded the 3D Award at 25th Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award in 2008, as well as the Bark Painting Award at the 34th Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award. She is included in many Australian Museum collections, including the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney; Art Gallery of Western Australia, Perth; and the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, Darwin.

The first time a work by Nyapanyapa Yunupingu appeared at auction was as late as 2014, over six years since her first solo exhibition at the prestigious Roslyn Oxley9 gallery in Sydney. Incidentally, this screenprint was also her only failure at auction. Only few works have appeared in the secondary market in total, and sare selling for ever-increasing amounts.  There is little doubt that this artist will have a growing presence in the auction houses in the years to come, provided that collectors are willing to let go of their prized paintings by this incredibly talented and well-represented artist. See market performance for more information.
