STORY
Adrian Jangala Robertson’s Family Portraits is a tender series of pen and watercolour works on paper that reflects his deep connection to family, memory, and Country. Born at Papunya in 1962, Adrian grew up at the heart of the early Western Desert art movement, recalling Geoff Bardon as his schoolteacher and witnessing the first generations of Papunya painters at work. His father’s Country extends from west of Walungurru through Karku at Nyirrpi to Warlukurlangu at Yuendumu, an expanse that anchors his family’s stories and ancestral ties. His father, Jampitjinpa, worked as a builder and gardener at Papunya and was brother to the late artist Darby Ross Jampitjinpa. His mother, the late Eunice Napangardi, was a respected painter whose Country at Yalpirakinu continues to inspire Adrian’s creative vision.
In this series, Adrian turns his gaze inward to depict those closest to him. The portraits, drawn with the fine precision of pen and softened with washes of watercolour, are quiet studies of presence and relationship. Each face is rendered with care and intimacy, revealing not just physical likeness but the emotional landscape of kinship: the strength of elders, the warmth of shared memory, the gentle endurance of family. His restrained palette and delicate layering give the works an almost meditative quality, where every line and wash becomes an act of remembrance.
