STORY
This painting combines landscape imagery with written words to express the deep personal and communal importance of Country to David Brown Jangala and his relatives. The visual elements depict features of the land—hills, waterholes, and pathways—rendered through Brown’s distinctive dotting technique, while the text directly communicates the emotional connection felt when family gathers on their ancestral land. The integration of words and image creates a layered narrative, making the artwork both a map and a message.
“This painting is about when my grandfather left his homeland country, Umari in the NT, for a time. He later returned to revisit Umari, to reconnect with Country because it was a place he loved and missed,” Brown explains. “This painting is saying how important Country is to me and my relatives. When we are on Country we all feel happy and glad to be together.” Through this work, Brown shares not only the physical landscape but also the sense of belonging, joy, and unity that arises from being on Country with family. The piece affirms the ongoing strength of these connections, highlighting Country as a source of identity, wellbeing, and community.
