STORY
This painting reflects David Brown Jangala’s unique artistic journey, shaped by a life lived between worlds—urban and remote, contemporary and traditional. Born in Perth and raised in Mulan, David later returned to the desert to reconnect with his father’s Country at Kiwirrkurra, where he learned from senior Law men and artists, including the renowned Papunya Tula painter Uta Uta Tjangala. His work draws deeply on these experiences, blending a strong grounding in Western Desert iconography with a confident, technically skilled hand. The painting speaks to a lived connection to place, family, and artistic lineage.
“I was a good drawer at school and have always worked on improving my skills,” Brown says. “I can do both styles—desert style and realism style.” While he painted occasionally for Papunya Tula as a young man, it was the time spent watching the old people and listening to his grandfather that most strongly informs his work. In this painting, he brings that knowledge to the surface: layered stories, remembered places, and inherited design. It stands as a bridge between generations and across regions, honouring both the legacy of desert painting and his own path as a contemporary Aboriginal artist.
