STORY
David Brown Jangala’s painting depicts a sacred ceremonial site near Yuendumu, a place of deep ancestral significance. Using intricate dotting and a carefully balanced composition, Brown maps the site as both a physical location and a spiritual meeting place. His design elements reference sandhills, waterholes, and ceremonial ground—features connected to his Warlpiri kinship and the Dreaming stories that guide law and culture. The painting reflects his connection to Country as lived knowledge passed through generations.
“This is sacred country where we come together for ceremony,” Brown explains. “We have been coming together on this country for ceremony for a very long time. My Grandfather's Grandfather's Grandfather's all came to this country. It is an important place for me and my ancestors.” His work preserves that continuity, recording not just place, but ongoing cultural practice. In painting this Country, Brown asserts custodianship and belonging, sharing with the viewer a vision grounded in memory, law, and ancestral presence.
