STORY

This painting maps Dorcas Bennett’s mother’s Country across a vivid red ground, animated by fields of orange, yellow and soft light-brown dotting. Black-lined roundels appear throughout the canvas, marking the rockholes, soakages and women’s travelling sites that shape the Country between Tjukurla and Warakurna. The movement of the dotting creates a sense of shifting terrain, sandhills, ridgelines and hidden water sources, read and remembered through generations of women. As the Warakurna certificate notes, “This painting is about Dorcas Bennett’s mother’s country… Dorcas reflects on her mother’s work and Country and her own connection to this part of the lands.”

The structure of the roundels and the flowing field of colour echo the visual language inherited from her mother, Nyurupayia Nampitjinpa (Mrs Bennett), a senior law woman whose deep knowledge of rockholes, water systems and ceremonial Country informed her own influential paintings. In this work, Dorcas continues that lineage with clarity and warmth, using the intensity of the red ground and the rhythm of the dotting to honour the stories entrusted to her and the enduring presence of her mother’s Country.
