STORY

This painting is grounded in Dorcas Bennett’s deep connection to her mother’s Country, expressed here through a vibrant blue ground alive with fields of orange and red dotting and grey roundels scattered across the canvas. The layered shifts in colour reveal the presence of water soakages, subtle changes in the land that are known, read and remembered through generations of women. As the Warakurna certificate notes, “This painting is about Dorcas Bennett’s mother’s country… Dorcas reflects on her mother’s work and country and her own connection to this part of the lands.”

Dorcas continues the stories inherited from her mother, Nyurupayia Nampitjinpa (Mrs Bennett), a revered law woman who grew up traditionally at Pangkupirri and became a healer and a holder of deep ceremonial authority. The roundels and flowing dot patterns echo the same rockholes, soakages and women’s travelling lines that Mrs Bennett painted throughout her life, mapping the desert’s water sources and the movements of ancestral women. In this work, Dorcas brings those narratives forward with her own vibrant rhythm, keeping alive the Tjukurrpa that defines her Country and her family’s custodianship.
