STORY
This painting carries Dorcas Bennett’s deep connection to her mother’s Country, expressed through a field of rhythmic dotting and roundels that map the rockholes, soakages and women’s travelling lines across the desert between Tjukurla and Warakurna. The repeated circular forms mark sites of ancestral significance, while the shifting movement of the dotting evokes the undulating sandhills and hidden water sources known through generations of women. As noted by Warakurna Artists, “This painting is about Dorcas Bennett’s mother’s country… Dorcas reflects on her mother’s work and Country and her own connection to this part of the lands.”
The visual language continues the legacy of her mother, Nyurupayia Nampitjinpa (Mrs Bennett), a senior law woman whose paintings of rockholes, desert water systems and women’s Tjukurrpa helped shape the Western Desert women’s painting movement. In this work, Dorcas brings those stories forward with clarity and devotion, mapping the landscapes she is custodian to and honouring the ancestral narratives woven through her family’s lineage.
