STORY
This painting draws directly from the ancestral narratives associated with Rockholes Site of Yumarra, one of the most significant subjects painted by Dorcas Bennett’s mother, Nyurupayia Nampitjinpa (Mrs Bennett). The work carries forward the same sweeping lines, rockhole motifs and rhythmic mapping that defined her mother’s depictions of this Country, while allowing Dorcas to articulate her own relationship to these places and responsibilities. It is a continuation of a powerful matrilineal tradition, reflecting both the physical geography of the Yumarra rockholes and the ceremonial knowledge embedded within them.
Nyurupayia was born in Pitjantjatjara Country near today’s Docker River community and spent her early childhood at Pangkupirri, a series of rockholes sheltered deep within the folded ranges of the Gibson Desert. Growing up traditionally and encountering no white people until her teens, she became a healer and a woman of great ritual authority, carrying extensive ceremonial knowledge tied to rockhole and water-country sites. Her large, complex canvases, mapping sand-dune corridors, rock formations and women’s inma designs, became among the most influential works of the Western Desert women’s painting movement. By the time of her passing in 2013, she was widely revered across the region for her law, knowledge and custodial strength.
In this work, Dorcas honours her mother’s legacy with clarity and respect. The imagery carries the weight of inherited Tjukurrpa, yet her handling of form and movement marks her own voice within the lineage. By revisiting the Yumarra rockholes, Dorcas reaffirms her role as custodian of these stories, ensuring the continuity of one of the most important narrative sites in her family’s cultural inheritance.
