STORY
This exceptional work by Poly Ngal stands apart for its depth, drama, and layered complexity. Set against a bold black ground, the surface ignites with yellow, white, pink, and red, each colour pulsing across the canvas in a shimmering constellation of dots. Beneath this vibrant field, the discreet presence of earlier Awelye (body-painting) designs can be glimpsed: faint linear traces that sit like shadows under the final surface. These underlying forms create a quiet counterpoint to the work’s luminosity, revealing the artist’s process and the ceremonial foundation from which her imagery emerges.
The interplay between the submerged body-painting lines and the energetic overlay of dots reflects Ngal’s deep custodial knowledge. The painting moves between past and present, between ceremony and contemporary expression, while maintaining the unmistakable energy of her hand. The result is a work of remarkable intensity and beauty, where colour appears to float above the surface, radiating outward from the darkness beneath. It is a rare and powerful example of Ngal expanding her visual language while remaining firmly grounded in the cultural practices of Ahalpere Country.
