STORY
In the 1980’s I was asked to work on a film with my friend Lindsay Frazer. It was a film biography of a Central Australian Aboriginal elder – Tjungkarta “Nosepeg” Tjupurrula.
“Nosepeg’s Movie” became an exciting journey for me and it was my first visit to Alice Springs and the centre. Nosepeg was an extraordinary character, larger than life and he would entertain us with his many stories. During that time Nosepeg introduced us to some of the Aboriginal Pupanya Tula artists. One of these was Johnny Warangkula Tjupurula and we spent a day filming with him as he painted on the desert sand. During that time I also met Two Bob Tjungurrayi and Billy Stockman Tjapaltjarri.
Later in Alice I purchased some paintings from these artists at the Pupanya Artists Gallery. There were no titles given for these paintings but then they were all identified by catalogue numbers on the back of the boards.
Noespeg, Johnny Warangkula and these artists have since passed on - these boards are a fond memory of that time.
