JOSHUA BONSON | SKIN - Moving Through Monochrome Art Leven - 17 Thurlow St, Redern, NSW 2016 2 - 23 August 2025 Viewing Room JOSHUA BONSON | SKIN - Moving Through Monochrome Joshua Bonson 2 - 23 August 2025 Art Leven - 17 Thurlow St, Redern, NSW 2016 SKIN – Moving through Monochrome Joshua Bonson 2 – 23 August 2025 Art Leven is proud to present SKIN – Moving through Monochrome , a bold new body of work by Torres Strait Islander artist Joshua Bonson. This exhibition marks a significant evolution in Bonson’s practice, his first major series since relocating from Darwin to Cairns to work full time as an artist. With this personal and professional shift comes a visual transformation: a move into a monochromatic palette that strips away colour to focus on form, texture, and the emotional resonance of light and shadow. At the core of SKIN is Bonson’s totem, the Saltwater Crocodile, a powerful symbol of identity, heritage, and place. His works have long explored the reptile’s protective skin as a metaphor for ancestral strength, kinship, and cultural memory. In this series, that imagery is reinterpreted through dynamic compositions rendered in black and white. These works feel elemental and raw, yet deeply refined, inviting viewers into an intimate dialogue with Bonson’s cultural and personal landscape. Using palette knives, brushes, and his hands, Bonson builds tactile surfaces that seem to breathe with energy. The scale-like markings, layered textures, and flowing forms speak to Country and sea, to memory and movement. Though abstract in appearance, each work holds specific meaning: they are meditations on belonging, portraits of family ties, and stories that transcend language. Bonson’s shift to monochrome also signals a deeper engagement with spirit. The absence of colour allows space for reflection, for both artist and audience. Light becomes a medium in itself, animating each work as it moves across the surface, revealing subtle shifts in tone, depth, and emotion. SKIN – Moving through Monochrome is an exhibition of reconnection and renewal. It reflects Bonson’s willingness to embrace change, to honour the past while exploring new visual and personal territories. In this remarkable series, Bonson invites us to slow down, to look closely, and to feel, offering a space of openness and quiet power. Each work is a window into his journey, but also a mirror—one that reflects our own capacity for connection, transformation, and story. COOEE ART AT AUSTRALIAN GALLERIES From 05 April to 24 April 2016 COOEE ART AT AUSTRALIAN GALLERIES From 05 April to 24 April 2016 COOEE ART AT AUSTRALIAN GALLERIES From 05 April to 24 April 2016 For this exhibition at Australian Galleries, Coo-ee Art Gallery has sourced works from local and international private collections and remote Aboriginal art communities, showcasing the very best the movement has to offer, including a number of major masterpieces. "The story of the modern Aboriginal art movement is one of the most exciting and transcendent chapters in the history of contemporary Australian art. Within the space of just 50 years Indigenous artists have transformed the perception of their culture from something of strictly ethnographic interest into one of the worlds most dynamic contemporary art movements. Today, high quality polymer paints, imported Belgian linen and the finest art papers are as likely to be used as materials gathered from the immediate environment. From its origins in rock painting, body art, ceremonial regalia, low relief sand sculpture and utilitarian objects, Aboriginal material culture has moved into the shrines of contemporary art and significant art collections all over the world. Coo-ee Art Gallery has traversed this terrain for over 30 years and is now the oldest exhibiting Aboriginal art gallery in Australia. The founding Director, Adrian Newstead OAM has worked with revered elders and cultural custodians in the Tiwi Islands, Arnhem Land, the Kimberley, the far reaches of the Tanami Desert and through to the Torres Strait Islands. Australian Galleries has its own rich history. Since 1956 it has been intimately associated with many of Australias greatest non-indigenous artists including Arthur Boyd, Sidney Nolan, Brett Whiteley and Fred Williams. Today, Stuart Purves AM walks in his parents founding footsteps, representing many of Australias most prominent contemporary painters and sculptors. I am of the opinion that the Australian Aborigine is probably the best artist in Australia. Recently we toured Australia, and the Aboriginal art amazed me. The Aborigine has a wonderful, dreaming philosophy which all Australian artists should have. Sidney Nolan, 1949 For this exhibition at Australian Galleries, Coo-ee Art Gallery has sourced works from local and international private collections and remote Aboriginal art communities, showcasing the very best the movement has to offer, including a number of major masterpieces."
- FIRST NATIONS FINE ART AUCTION - Art Leven
FIRST NATIONS FINE ART AUCTION Art Leven - 17 Thurlow St, Redfern, Gadigal / Sydney Tuesday 17th June 2025 AEST 7:00pm FIRST NATIONS FINE ART AUCTION Important Works by First Nations Artists Tuesday 17th June 2025 AEST 7:00pm FIRST NATIONS FINE ART AUCTION Important Works by First Nations Artists Tuesday 17th June 2025 AEST 7:00pm Art Leven - 17 Thurlow St, Redfern, Gadigal / Sydney Tuesday night’s auction was a resounding affirmation of the strength and resilience of the Australian market for top-tier First Nations artists, achieving an impressive 75% clearance rate by volume—almost double that of other recent First Nations auctions. The energy in the room was serious, with many of the country’s leading consultants and collectors in attendance, reinforcing the depth of local engagement with this important sector. While a few key international buyers were momentarily unreachable for works they had registered interest in—understandable with global attention drawn to both Art Basel’s VIP preview and the G7 Summit—it was heartening to see such robust bidding from Australian collectors. Only five of the sold works went overseas, highlighting the passion and commitment of our domestic base. We’re incredibly grateful for their continued support, which ensures the market remains vibrant, confident, and future-facing. The withdrawal of 18 lots the day before the auction gave us an opportunity to refine the offering, allowing the strongest works to take centre stage. The decision was made in the best interest of all parties, and we’re confident those works will have their moment in the spotlight soon. This strategic decision paid off, helping us deliver a focused and compelling sale. We are incredibly grateful to the artists, vendors, collectors, and advisors who continue to place their trust in us. Their ongoing commitment ensures the First Nations art market remains vibrant, confident, and forward-looking—despite the ever-changing global context. The Collectors Room: Highlights from the Secondary Market Booth J09 | Carriageworks, Everleigh Viewing Room The Collectors Room: Highlights from the Secondary Market Booth J09 | Carriageworks, Everleigh THE COLLECTORS ROOM Highlights from the Secondary Market Alongside our exhibition Ngarukuruwala Kapi Murrakupuni Art Leven is proud to present a focused selection of secondary market works, led by Emily Kame Kngwarreye’s Alalgura Country , 1993. Placing these works in dialogue highlights the continuity of First Nations art, from community-driven practice alive today, to the landmark paintings that shaped international recognition of Frist Nations voices in global contemporary art. The timing resonates strongly with the Tate Modern’s forthcoming retrospective Emily Kam Kngwarray (10 July 2025 – 11 January 2026), underscoring the worldwide momentum surrounding her practice and the broader field. This presentation speaks directly to Art Leven’s dual identity. Our exhibitions celebrate the innovation of living artists and their art centres, while our Collectors Room and auctions provide a platform for historically significant works to be rediscovered, contextualised, and placed into the hands of new custodians. Together, these complementary strands reflect our long-standing mission: to honour the strength and diversity of First Nations art while deepening its resonance in Australia and internationally. Known as Banbay, ”blind one”, because of his poor eyesight, Wakuthi passed away on 2005. Today his sons Djambawa (winner of the 2019 Testra Art Award) and Nuwandjall play a large role in the day to day management of the large Madarrpa clan homeland, Yilpara and Muluyumuluy works with them producing important Madarrpa clan paintings. Her sister Mulkun Wirrpanda is also a senior artist. Muluymuluy holds extensive knowledge of native plants of North East Arnhem Land and her artwork embodies this knowledge. Amongst the plant species represented in her works, are berries, yams and other edible species including Buwakul (native grape), Dilminyin (scaly ash), and Ganguri/Manmuna (long yam). Her bark paintings depict Bulwutja, which grows in and around the billabongs and swampy areas on Madarrpa land. The plants grow in clumps after the rains and are pulled out in clumps, cooked underground or on coals, then mashed into a blackish grey paste that is tasty and nutritious. This paste can also be baked into a bread.
