DAVID BROWN | NGAMAKU TARRIKA 17 Thurlow St, Redern, NSW 2016 09 June - 02 July 2022 DAVID BROWN | NGAMAKU TARRIKA David Brown 09 June - 02 July 2022 DAVID BROWN | NGAMAKU TARRIKA David Brown 09 June - 02 July 2022 17 Thurlow St, Redern, NSW 2016 David was born in Perth and raised between Mulan, Western Australia and Kintore in the Northern Territory, his mother’s and his father’s communities, respectively. Later, the family moved to the new community of Kiwirrkurra, where David was taught by School of the Air before the official community school was established. Simultaneously, the artist was educated on Country by his grandfathers, including one of the original and most revered Papunya Tula artists in Uta Uta Tjangala. His mother, Ivy Robertson, was also an artist, painting alongside the likes of Susie Bootja Bootja and Millie Skeen at Warlayirti Art Centre in Balgo Hills. David showed early talent at school, when learning landscape painting from a visiting Canadian art teacher. At the time, his work was selected for an exhibition in Alice Springs. After completing boarding school in Perth, David travelled throughout Western Australian and the Northern Territory, spending time in Halls Creek and occasionally painting for Papunya Tula before returning to Kiwirrkurra. “I watched the old people paint there. I was a good drawer at school and always work on improving my skills. I can do both styles, desert style and realism style.” David has dedicated his debut solo exhibition to his parents and to his grandfather and grandmother “for taking me to Country and teaching me the Dreamtime stories.” VIEW CATALOGUE EX 234

She has the distinguished heritage of being the great-granddaughter of Paddy Japaljarri Sims, a foundational figure in the painting of the renowned Yuendumu school doors and a co-founder of the art centre in 1985. Her artistic lineage also includes her mother, Geraldine Napangardi Granites, and her late grandmother, Alma Nungarrayi Granites, both of whom are celebrated artists. Having spent most of her life in Yuendumu, Athena completed her education at the local Senior Girls Upper School in 2009. Post-graduation, she worked at Mt Theo, a program that focuses on youth development and leadership, providing her with valuable work experience. Athena began painting with Warlukurlangu in 2010, developing her skills by observing her mother, sisters, and grandmother. Her art primarily revolves around Jukurrpa (Dreaming) from both her father's side, which includes Ngapa Jukurrpa (Water Dreaming), and her mother's side, featuring Ngalyipi Jukurrpa (Snake Vine Dreaming) and Yanjirlpirri Jukurrpa (Seven Sisters Dreaming). It is her contemporary rendition of the Seven Sisters Story that has captured the global art community's attention. Drawing inspiration from her grandmother's depiction of celestial skies, Athena utilizes a vibrant and unrestricted palette and embraces an experimental approach to the interplay of paint and water. She focuses on the natural reactions and textures that arise during the painting process, allowing the unpredictable effects of the materials to guide the development of her images. Her technique involves intricate dot work and the application of splashes and fine mists of colour, creating a dynamic illusion of space, distance, and intimacy. The visual depth and complexity in Athena's paintings invite viewers to engage in a contemplative experience, akin to exploring the cosmos. Athena is married to Sebastian Jupurrurla Wilson, and together they have one son. Beyond her art, she enjoys traditional activities such as hunting for Honey Ants, Bush Banana, Goanna, and Kangaroo with her family when the conditions are favorable, thereby maintaining a deep connection with her cultural roots and the land. - HELEN S. TIERNAN | MEMORY SPACE - Art Leven
HELEN S. TIERNAN | MEMORY SPACE Cooee Art Redfern & Online From 17 April to 08 May 2021 HELEN S. TIERNAN | MEMORY SPACE Artists: Helen S. Tiernan From 17 April to 08 May 2021 HELEN S. TIERNAN | MEMORY SPACE Artists: Helen S. Tiernan From 17 April to 08 May 2021 Cooee Art Redfern & Online Helen S. Tiernan uses her art like an archaeological tool, to interrogate, challenge and explore the many layers and contradictions that lie below the surface of contact history. From her earliest years at Canberra School of art, Helen’s interest lay in narrative, historical, satirical, and romantic art. She began by using the embossed and relief patterning found in decorative interiors, employing wallpaper as a metaphor in validating and acknowledging the historical female domestic experience, including the claustrophobia and repressive control that creative women experienced within the confines of their homes and family and extrapolated this to Aboriginal women in servitude. In 2014, Tiernan presented Farming Without Fences, her first solo exhibition at Cooee Art. The exhibition was profoundly influenced by Bill Gammage’s ground-breaking book, The Biggest Estate on Earth - How Aborigines Made Australia. The paintings, like the book, explored the contrasting ways our ancient continent has been viewed and ‘managed’ by colonisers and First Australians. By 2017, Helen had turned her attention to the theme of first contact in the antipodes, drawing upon material that documented the process of ‘transculturation’, during the 235 years since Australia colonisation. Her richly research-based art mined both European and Indigenous archival records from the colonial art of Joseph Lycett to Tupia (James Cook’s Polynesian navigator) to the imagery of William Barak and Tommy McRae. Her works were alive with contemporaneous references to the writing of Paul Irish Hidden in Plain View, Bruce Pasco Dark Emu, Bill Gammage The Greatest Estate on Earth, and art historian Ian McLean, revealing the intimate knowledge of, and deep connection to, Country. The exhibition, Transculturation - Sublime & Surreal Encounters of First Encounters in the Antipodes, featured three major works about Cook’s adventures in the Pacific and the role played by his Polynesian navigator Tupia. All three were acquired by the National Maritime Museum. In this latest exhibition, Helen S. Tiernan has been inspired by the ground-breaking international touring exhibition Songlines - tracking the seven sisters. Foremost amongst a number of other influences have been The Memory Code, written by Lynne Kelly, thus the exhibition title, and Alison Page’s Clever Country. In this exhibition Tiernan’s landscapes are cultured spaces, repositories of ancient knowledge and deep memory. They are storied with Songlines and Tjukurrpa and inflected with the moralities arising from mythology that reminds us of how values and identities are formed. By re-digesting and transforming history through her own creative process Helen S. Tiernan challenges us to revisit and re-interpret it. Her works present us with Songlines that are richly multi-layered post-contemporary insights into what it means to be a truly cognisant Australian. - Adj. Tracey Moffatt | Up in the Sky Art Redfern - 17 Thurlow St, Redfern Gadigal, NSW 2016 3 - 24 May 2025 Tracey Moffatt | Up in the Sky Tracey Moffatt 3 - 24 May 2025 Tracey Moffatt | Up in the Sky Tracey Moffatt 3 - 24 May 2025 Art Redfern - 17 Thurlow St, Redfern Gadigal, NSW 2016 Tracey Moffatt’s 1997 series Up in the Sky, is a haunting photographic set of 25 monochrome images that evoke the cinematic stills of a non-linear narrative set in a remote country town marked by hardship and social marginalisation. Through recurring figures—a young non-Indigenous woman and an Indigenous infant, the series subtly references the continents fraught history of assimilation policies and the forced separation of First Nations families, without offering definitive interpretations. Moffatt, known for crafting rather than capturing images, blends personal memory with cultural and cinematic references, drawing from both local iconography, desolate roads, fibro housing, mission churches, and international influences such as Pasolini’s Accattone and the dystopian landscape of Mad Max. The result is a powerful, symbolic meditation on identity, loss, and resilience within the broader context of our postcolonial realities.
