The prize encourages the interpretation of the landscape as a significant contemporary genre, its long tradition in Australian painting as a key contributor to our national ethos, and is a positive initiative in private patronage of the arts in Australia. Marlene Antico OAM, created the Paddington Art Prize in order to assist with the monetary difficulties that often impede artists from showcasing their works. WUMERA NANGAMAY - A SALT LAKE SERIES Art Leven - 17 Thurlow St, Redfern, Gadigal, NSW 2016 June 13 - July 13 2024 Viewing Room WUMERA NANGAMAY - A SALT LAKE SERIES Konstantina June 13 - July 13 2024 Art Leven - 17 Thurlow St, Redfern, Gadigal, NSW 2016 ARTIST STATEMENT: Wumera Nangamay: A Salt Lake Series Translation: to fly like a bird or a spear through the sky into dreaming (‘nanga’- sleep, ‘may’ - eye) Our connection to Country embodies more than merely the physical realm; it also allows us to connect spiritually. It is this spirituality that is often spoken of in Western terms as ‘dreaming’. Growing up in an urban city, this complex spiritual understanding was very limited for me. It is only now, as an adult, a mother, and a woman living in regional Australia - without the clutter and noise of a city - that I have begun to understand and lean into this way of being and knowing. One of the Gadigal songlines describes a physical and spiritual connection to a place other than our own Country, connects the Gadi to Kati Thanda (Lake Eyre). The great salt lake occupies 9,700 square kilometres of the desert and the wider basin area it sits within spans the intersection of South Australia, the Northern Territory, Queensland, and New South Wales. I have long been fascinated with this place, well before I knew of the songline and its significance to my ancestors. This lake is arid, dried out, and overwhelmingly beautiful in its many states of living and being. The lake and its creeks, waterholes, and tributaries only flow after the great desert rains and have been cared for by Arabana custodians for tens of thousands of years. There is also a very special Gadi story of the Garanga (Pelican) that follows breeding cycles between Warrane (Sydney) and Kati Thanda; it demonstrates a deep knowing of animal, spirit, people, and place. It is this wisdom of the cycles, this knowing of place that kicked off this series, a study of our great salt lakes, as seen by a bird soaring through the sky, dreaming of our big Countries. She embarked on her painting career in 1986 in Balgo, and since then, has played a significant role in nurturing the artistic talents of younger family members, introducing them to painting and the cultural narratives that accompany this practice. Her commitment to preserving and promoting Indigenous culture extends beyond her art. Bai Bai has contributed to several publications, most notably to Yarrtji: Six Women’s stories from the Great Sandy Desert , published in 1997 by Aboriginal Studies Press, Canberra. This work was recognized for its cultural and historical significance and was shortlisted for the NSW Premier’s History Awards in 1998. Bai Bai's contributions are not limited to the arts. She is a longstanding member of the Kimberley Land Council, where she has been an influential voice in land rights discussions and a staunch advocate for women's law and culture in Balgo. Her life and work are further enriched by her partnership with the late artist Sunfly Tjampitjin, with whom she shared not only her personal life but also a deep commitment to their community’s cultural heritage and artistic expression. Through her diverse efforts, Bai Bai has significantly impacted her community and the preservation and interpretation of its cultural practices. Although the gallery will remain focused on First Nations art, going forward as Art Leven, the gallery will exhibit non-Indigenous alongside First Nations artists, through specially curated individual projects. The new gallery vision will focus on transparent dialogue, offering an opportunity beyond the ordinary commercial relationship between artist and gallery, fostering an environment of openness and direct exchanges between artists. The collaborations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists offer a chance for new and innovative artistic expressions to emerge, and for meaningful conversations to take place. The program offers an opportunity to build not just a closed commercial relationship between artist and gallery, but an environment of openness and comfort in understanding the commercial gallery system through exchanges with other free-agent artists. country x Country is the first iteration of the new annual program, launching as the inaugural exhibition in the new chapter of the gallery on July 27th 2023. The specific focus of this project and the resulting exhibition was mark-making and painting craft, especially when it comes to landscape painting and ways of seeing country. The workshop was based not around specific imagery, but around approach, how the tangible landscape is portrayed through the artists’ unique brushstrokes. The painting project leading up to this exhibition was graciously hosted by the Warlpiri owners of Warnayaka Arts in Lajamanu over five days of painting at the art centre studio. The ‘workshop’ was not led or guided, open to anyone in the community who wanted to partake. As early as the first day of painting in the centre, the joyful trio of Kitty Napanangka Simon, Annie Napanangka Simon and Biddy Napanangka Timms bestowed Tomkins with his Warlpiri skin name. For the rest of the workshop, the ladies addressed Neil only as Tjapanangka. After first setting up on the ground outside in the all-but-unused men’s painting area, Neil soon found his spot in the studio – crouched, as he often does in his Sydney studio space, on a paint-splattered mat, close by Kitty’s favoured painting table. Within the buzz of Kitty’s return to painting the were many peaceful moments, the soundscape consisting only of the ladies chatting and laughing in Warlpiri, often humming along to their songlines playing through speakers, and the ever active scratching of brush bristles on linen. Some, between sessions, Kitty would turn to watch Tomkins work. She would smile and point to a corner of his painting, recognising the depicted place in or around town. She’d call out his name, Tjapanangka! , and confirm with him, teach him the Warlpiri term, or tell an anecdote about the spot. Each time, his smile beamed with pride at Napanangka Simon’s recognition.
