Community: Fitzroy Crossing

Language: Walmajarri and Nyikina

Annette Lormada was born in 1961 in Fitzroy Crossing and is affectionately known by her bush name, Bingarli. Raised amidst the rich storytelling tradition of her family, Annette grew up immersed in the Two Dogs Dreaming Story, which continues to inspire her paintings to this day. She spent her formative years attending school in Fitzroy Crossing, before moving to Junjuwa and later to Nookanbah, where she worked in community stores.

Annette embarked on her painting journey relatively recently, starting at the Mangkaja studio after being influenced by the senior artists there. Her dynamic and playful approach to art, characterized by a strong use of colour and composition, quickly garnered recognition. In 2020, Annette's unique style earned her finalist positions in prestigious awards, including the Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards (NATSIAA) and the Port Headland Jury Prize.

Known for her contemporary and whimsical style, Annette's paintings vividly depict the creation stories she learned as a child. Her works evoke memories of her childhood experiences, such as fishing along the Fitzroy River, translating these personal and cultural narratives into vibrant visual forms that capture the essence of her heritage and the beauty of her surroundings.
