Margaret Gilbert is an emerging Indigenous artist who began working with Durrmu Arts in August of 2017. Her three sisters Susan, Beatrice and Diana also paint for the art centre located in Peppimenarti approximately 300km south west of Darwin.
Peppimenarti was founded in the mid 70s as a permanent settlement for the Ngan’gikurrunggurr people. ‘Peppi’ translates as rock and ‘menarti’ as large, referring to the rock formation that overlooks the community. At its base is a wide stream and a series of pools which is a significant, sacred site. Today, the community has a population of approximately 200 people.
This artwork depicts the wetlands and billabongs around Peppimenarti. In this piece Margaret paints the dragonfly surrounded by overlapping circular strokes referencing barramundi scales.
