Such references to early European heroes as Cook set the stage for Tiernan’s miniature portrait series Heroes of Colonial Encounter – Repainted, re-Historicized. This time she reimagines history, ingeniously recasts the status of Aboriginal people of the time, painting Bennelong, Bungaree, Truganini, Colby, Bidgee Bidgee and Ballodere no longer as anonymous ‘Savage’, ‘Primitive’ or ‘Other’ as sometimes presented in early accounts but instead, as equal amongst others. In the context of the exhibition they are hung alongside those of such former colonial masters as James Cook, Joseph Banks, James Solander, Arthur Philip and Matthew Flinders. However this time the interpretations of history are subverted and the importance of Aboriginal people accentuated by the formality and decorative excess given to them.
