Story
Narpula paints women’s ceremonies or coming of age ceremonies. Narpula assisted her husband for many years in painting the background details to his paintings, but first began working independently in the 80s. In those early years she was the only female artist working in the Papunya area.
The imagery in the painting deals with women’s business, women are coming from different directions dancing around the ceremonial pole, depicted by the red roundel in the centre of the picture. The young women dancing in this ceremony are being welcomed into womanhood by the elders sitting surrounding the ceremony. Also surrounded by Tali (sand hills) and rock holes (smaller circles)
Her composition is symmetrical creating a sense of rhythm and movement to the painting. This painting depicts women dancing in ceremony from an aerial perspective. Narpula loves to dance and she is usually only too willing to give a demonstration.
