Story
Arone is a multi award winning Aboriginal artist from Far North Queensland who has spent time in India; France where he lived for 3 years working at the Arts International, and the USA where he worked extensively with Native American artists. His art reflects influences from all these cultures dominated by his own Aboriginal heritage. His work comprises elements of India’s highly exotic yet religious images, influences from trips to Arnhem Land and dreaming images from his own ancestors of Far North Queensland. His prints are wonderfully expressive, fresh and spontaneous. In his own words – “Through my art I have identity and strength. It would be true to say that I am hunting for lost pieces of myself, but through my culture I have found many of the answers. My work is about sorting out my frustrations. It’s about my anger, my happiness and the way I express myself.”
In the Works on paper Fetish I show images of my journey to Sante Fe, there are dilly bags, similar to pouches or a small bag, which are packed with special sacred herbs and stones. These herbs and stones are traditionally used during travels by my totem clan.
In the bottom half of this Works on paper are depicted female life forms, the oval shape in the middle of the Works on paper depicts unified male and female forms, while the figure floating at the top represents one of us, the self, that carries its fetishes on its back.
