STORY
Rosella Namok is a leading artist from the Lockhart River community in Cape York Peninsula. Her work bridges contemporary and traditional Indigenous art, drawing on her connection to sandbeach Country through body paint designs, tidal patterns, and sand drawings made with the women in her family. Her unique technique involves layering flat fields of colour, then using her fingers and homemade tools to carve into the surface, creating textured furrows and a sense of movement. She often mixes glossy and matte finishes, building depth and atmosphere.
In her Moon series, Rosella captures the full moon rising over the ocean, its light reflected on the water or radiating into the sky. These works take a conceptual approach to landscape, evoking mood and mystery through soft streaks of colour and shifting light.
Her paintings also reference the region’s clan groups and the two moieties, Kaapay and Kuyan, that underpin Cape York’s social structure. Rain, moonlight, and waterholes are recurring themes in her deeply atmospheric practice.
