STORY

This large canvas maps Dorcas Bennett’s mother’s Country through a dense constellation of red, pale blue and yellow dotting set against a deep black ground. Small roundels ripple across the surface, each marking rockholes, soakages and features of women’s Country between Tjukurla and Warakurna. A distinctive cluster of roundels in the upper right, punctuated by white dots, denotes an area of particular cultural importance, a site known through ancestral narratives and passed on through Dorcas’s matrilineal line. As the Warakurna certificate affirms, “This painting is about Dorcas Bennett’s mother’s Country… Dorcas reflects on her mother’s work and country and her own connection to this part of the lands.”

The mapping of these sites continues the visual and cultural legacy of her mother, Nyurupayia Nampitjinpa (Mrs Bennett), a senior law woman who grew up traditionally at Pangkupirri and carried profound knowledge of rockholes, water systems and women’s Tjukurrpa. The roundels and surrounding dot fields echo the ceremonial designs and desert topographies Mrs Bennett was renowned for painting. In this work, Dorcas brings those narratives forward with quiet intensity, using colour, repetition and the depth of the black ground to honour the stories entrusted to her and the enduring significance of the places they describe.
