STORY
"The circles in this painting represent the many rockholes (tjukula) throughout my country. I am from Pipalyatjara in the APY Lands and this is where my country is. Pipalyatjara is in the far north-west of South Australia right near the border with Western Australia. I paint tjukula because finding water in the desert was so important to Anangu in the old days."
The APY Art Centre Collective is a social enterprise made up of eleven Aboriginal-owned and governed art and culture organisations from the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands. Together, these organisations work to create sustainable income for Aboriginal artists and to support the vital role that art centres play in APY communities.
This artwork was created at the APY Art Centre Collective’s APY Studio in Adelaide, which acts as a satellite art centre for artists living away from Country. The studio provides stable income opportunities, culturally safe support, and access to healthcare, while also helping APY artists stay connected to community and culture when they are in Adelaide.
